June 14, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

GWU Textile Museum

Lecture: Tourism, Change, and the Textile Economy Among the Miao in Guizhou

Tim Oakes, director, Center of Asian Studies, University of Colorado, Boulder

5:30 PM: Reception
6 PM: Lecture

Join Center of Asian Studies Director (University of Colorado) Tim Oakes to reflect on the changes he has witnessed conducting research in Southwest China’s Guizhou Province over the past thirty years. The cultural economy of textile production among the Miao in Guizhou has experienced dramatic transformations as a result of urbanization, infrastructure development, and tourism. In the face of these changes, a sustainable pattern of textile production remains elusive, despite substantial improvements to people’s livelihoods.

This program relates to the exhibition Vanishing Traditions: Textiles and Treasures from Southwest China. Fee: $10/museum members and GW students, faculty, and staff; $15/public. Advance registration is required; space is limited. Register online or call 202-994-7394.
